talk to your doc to find out what will work for you.I tried the fish oil pills and had an allergic reaction.I have had seasonal affective disorder for about most of my life.My mom could never figure out why on rainy or cloudy days I didn't want to play with the other kids but now she knows at the age of 48.I also take prozac and light therapy for mine and it works for me but what works for some may not work for you. Checking with your doctor would be the best thing to do.Good luck,Sharon W.

MadforMA gave you some great advice.

Do you feel this same sadness during the summer months? If so, it may be depression rather than seasonal affective disorder. SAD tends to kick in during the fall months when the days get shorter and then goes away when the days get longer, usually in March.

There are a few medicines that can treat SAD. Antidepressant medications from the serotonin selective reuptake inhibitor family (SSRI) family can be used to treat seasonal affective disorder that occur during summer as well as the fall and winter. Some common SSRIs are Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, and Celexa. These drugs do have some side effects that are quite common, including insomnia, nausea, diarrhea, and decreased sex drive or performance.

The link below has more info. Good Luck!

Omega 3 fish oil can help in addition to healthy food an exercise already mentioned. You want 1-2 grams of the EPA ingredient. That's what matters, not the rest of the stuff that comes with it. Recent studies show it's as effective as 20mg of Prozac. There also is the antidepressant alternative. Personally, I'd try the Omega 3s and healthy lifestyle first.

You need to eat healthy and stay on an exercise program regularly. I also tan (not enough to hurt my skin) and I take good vitamins and suppliments. I havent had a problem for years now, since I changed my diet and started exercising. NO SUGAR or Caffeine of Processed Foods. You will see that you will feel better. Also make sure you colon is going every day.

Sounds like you may have it, here is what to do:

If you cannot find a sheltered area to sit with hands, face and maybe feet exposed for 15-20 minutes (no suntan lotion), then sit next to a sunny window and enjoy the rays.

Also, watch what you eat, sugary and fatty foods make SAD worse.

You also should take a multi-vitamin that has Vitamin D in it (at least 500 miligrams) per day. Drink milk that has D and eat veggies that have it too.

Make sure to get some sort of exercise daily, for at least 20 minutes. This helps to get the endorphins in the brain active which is a mood elevator.

Moving to Washington wouldn't help. It rains nine months out of the year there. My aunt lives there and suffers from depression because of the weather. Maybe you could go to school in California or Florida.

I'm sure it contributes to it.I dont have that, but I no for me during the winter and days like these in NY with these clouds just hovering over makes me depressed.I have twin newborns who were not allowed out of the house during the winter due to being born very premature so I've been unable to leave my house in months so I share your depression and just wish it would get warm out.Although right now on Long Island it is turning into a nice day so you say your in the northeast area maybe it's getting sunny where you are.If it is get out of the house and go for a walk. You get a natural happy high for having the sunshine in your eyes.it turns into a natural lithium which in return makes us happy.I hope you feel better soon and hang in there...I know how you feel...Soon it will be SUNNY:):):):):):):)
